Traveling can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right resources and a little bit of research, you can find the perfect destination even on a budget!
When planning a trip, the cost per day is extremely important for creating my budget. There are many ways to find specific information for the particular destination that you’re interested in. A lot of blogs are helpful in divulging this kind of information.
If you’re on a tight budget, but you want an incredible experience, here are 5 destinations you can visit for under $50 a day (USD)!
1. Thailand

As a major bucket list destination for many, Thailand can be extremely crowded, however, it has remained relatively cheap considering it is a popular tourist destination. If you’re looking for budget travel, you can easily live off of about $35 USD per day. Tourist activities don’t usually cost more than $10, budget dorms can be around $10 per night, and if you stick to street food, you’ll probably only end up spending around $10 a day on food.
Of course, you can choose to spend however you’d like, and keep in mind that more popular islands may tend to cost more per day.
2. Central America

It is hard to choose just one country in particular as all of them are relatively cheap per day. You could easily travel for about $40-50 per day. Despite many safety concerns, Central America is known to be one of the cheapest areas for backpacking. I’m unsure that this is a challenge I would be willing to take on, but it is completely doable if you’re looking for an exciting adventure!
3. Hungary

One of the factors that draw tourists to Hungary, and Budapest in particular, is how inexpensive it is to travel once you’re there. The country is beautiful, affordable, and historic. Transportation, hostels, and meals are all under $10 USD per day making it possible to travel for around $50 USD per day in Hungary. You can also take day trips to other popular cities from Budapest without having to spend too much money on accommodations.
4. Peru

What is better than an affordable travel destination? One that is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Peru is home to Machu Picchu, making it one of the most popular destinations in South America. After doing a lot of research on Peru, it would be easy to live on $50 USD here each day. If you opt for hostels, the accommodations start at around $10 per night. Street food is also extremely cheap as well.
On a side note- if you choose to embark on tons of activities and treks, you may want to consider increasing your budget for those activities. If you are just making the most of everyday life in Peru, $50 should be a reasonable budget for those concerned with cost.
5. Bulgaria

I’m sure if you ask the average person where Bulgaria is, they will likely have no clue. Bulgaria is often an overlooked country in Europe, however, it is perfect for those looking to travel on a strict low budget. With it being overlooked, you often get lesser crowds here as well.
Hostels typically start at $10 per night, street food is inexpensive, and a lot of activities are either free or under $10. There are some that can be more expensive, but why not splurge every now and then? It would be easy to live off of about $40 USD per day here.
There. are many more amazing destinations that don’t have to cost an arm and a leg to visit. Don’t be fooled by airline prices. Sometimes it may seem too expensive by the price of the flight, but once you get there you don’t spend a whole lot! If you can scout out some cheap flights to these destinations as well, you can really travel for a steal. The best part of visiting places that are less expensive once you get there is that you can extend your trip and really soak in the destination that you choose.
Unfortunately, traveling to some of these places may mean budget accommodations and street food rather than gourmet meals and a luxury hotel, but getting to experience a new place in any capacity is worth it! Right?
Let me know what you think? Do you visit budget destinations and try to live luxuriously or are you okay with hostels for the week? I like to mix it up from time to time, but I do have my boundaries and what I am willing to give up and what I am not willing to give up on a trip!
