1. Santa Justa Lift
I did not get to ride the world’s most beautiful elevator due to crowds and time constraints but it does draw quite the attention. The vertical lift was open in 1902 and designed by Portugal native, Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. The elevator crafted from cast-iron resembles a distinct French-style. I truly wish I would have had the opportunity to view the city of Lisbon from this magnificent mode of transportation.

2. National Azulejo Museum
Lisbon is full of displays of beautiful tiles (azulejos) that brighten up buildings and streets. These hand-painted beauties, most commonly in blue and white, are one of Portugal’s most important traditions. At the National Azulejo Museum take in the intricate workings that capture the city prior to the earthquake of 1755. These tiles span two walls and are absolutely beautiful to look at!

3. Pastéis de Belém
Portugal’s signature confection, Pastel de Nata, can be found all through Lisbon, but none will live up to the ones served here. This shop is full of history and has been around since 1837 producing this recipe. So if you’re going to try one of these cinnamon-dusted egg custards, this is the place to do it! Enjoy them leisurely in the beautiful blue-and-white tiled room. I just wish I would’ve taken a picture of the place while I was there!

4. Belém Tower
The Belém Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage site built on the northern bank of the Tagus River between 1514 to 1520. I have seen this beautiful structure more than a couple times but have never navigated the interior of the building. It was constructed to defend the city originally! The tower has narrow stairs, five stories, and a rooftop terrace that are quite the trek. I imagine the views are 100% worth it though! The tower alone is quite a beauty.

There are SO many more things you should do when visiting Lisbon! Hopefully this is a starting point for planning your visit. If you are traveling to Portugal, Lisbon is just one of the many places that should be on your list. You should at least give yourself a few days in the capital city to enjoy all there is to do, see, and eat!
