Salzburg in a Day
While staying in Munich, I opted for a day trip to Salzburg. It is a quick train ride from Munich. I booked this day trip from Trip Advisor as well and the tour company was SANDEMANs New Europe. Our guide was amazing and this walking tour took us through the heart of Salzburg. We learned about history in Salzburg and visited landmarks such as Mozart’s Birthplace, Mirabell Palace, and Festung Hohensalzburg. Salzburg was beautiful and decorated for Christmastime. Like Munich, there were many Christmas Markets around Salzburg. If you are familiar with the movie “The Sound of Music” then you will recognize some landmarks that are in the movie. Our tour guide also made a point to mention them.
Random fact: Our tour guide who is a German native has never heard of “The Sound of Music” until she began giving these tours and many Americans were interested in the sights.
What is Festung Hohensalzburg? Click on the tab below to visit the website. This is an old fortress in the heart of Salzburg. There is a lift that I HIGHLY recommend taking that will bring you to the top. There is a bit more climbing to do but there is tons to explore at the top. Inside the fortress there are cafes and restaurants to stop and grab a bite to eat at. Want a taste of tradition Viennese food? Consider lunch at the fortress. You can climb up the fortress for free, but I did not do that.

One of the things I wish I could’ve done while in Salzburg is visit the museum that is Mozart’s Birthplace. I walked into the inside to get a peek, but unfortunately I did not have enough time to complete the tour so I chose not to pay for it. I would definitely recommend spending more than one day in Salzburg if given the chance, if not, going for a day tour is worth it!

Tip: Above is the Makartsteg Bridge or the “Love Lock Bridge”, a pedestrian bridge that goes over the Salzach River. Bring your own lock to place on this bridge. I completely forgot about the lock I was going to bring until we walked to the bridge. I was so disappointed, so don’t forget to bring your lock!
