Houston By Season

Winter-

I feel like Houston’s winter season is a lot like a typical southern winter. Mild temperatures, but there are days that can be extremely cold and wet. The chance of snow is not likely, so don’t expect a winter wonderland. A perk of visiting in the winter though is possibly enjoying activities that you cannot do in the sweltering heat of the summer!

  • The only time I’ve visited Houston in the winter is during New Years. One of the big attractions during this time is celebrating the New Year at any of the various high-end NYE parties. You can also head downtown to enjoy the annual fireworks show! I rang in the new year at the Anvil Bar which, like most places, offered a free champagne toast at midnight! **Tip: expected LONG wait times and lines. Find somewhere that takes reservations if possible, paying the extra money is probably worth it.
  • Ice skating in the Galleria (if that’s your thing), is always available year-round, but it seems like a great activity to enjoy during the wintertime!
  • A huge attraction during the months of February and March, right at the end of the season, is the annual Houston Rodeo! I loved the time I went to the rodeo, and I wouldn’t call myself a huge western fan. Big names in the music industry come to perform each year, so even if a rodeo isn’t your thing, there may be a great concert to see!

Spring/ Fall-

  • Make a trip to the Houston Zoo located in Hermann Park, near downtown! The zoo requires lots of walking outside, so going when the temperatures are not as hot makes spring or fall a better time to go.
  • See an Astro’s baseball game in Minute Maid Park! Depending on the weather, the roof of the park can be open or closed.
  • Visit any of Houston’s many parks/gardens:
    • Buffalo Bayou Park
    • Eleanor Tinsley Park
    • Hermann Park
    • McGovern Centennial Gardens
    • Houston Botanic Gardens

Summer-

HOT. I probably don’t even need to say more, but being from Louisiana, I would say Houston’s summer is much like what I experience at home. It’s humid, HOT, and can typically be rainy. Enjoying outdoor activities is tough unless you dress properly and stay hydrated. Don’t let that keep you from visiting during this season though, there are still many ways to keep cool in the summer months!

  • The Marriott Marquis Houston has an amazing Texas-shaped lazy river! I’ve never been before, but I know that if I were to visit again in the summer, I’d spend the day relaxing here.
  • Shop till you drop and stay cool inside the Houston Galleria
